First Impression: Busuu

Busuu is a website whose purpose is to teach you a foreign language and I tested it in the past two days(today and yesterday). The reason why I did this is because I want to be able to have a decent conversation in Turkish by Monday and I need all the help I can get. Is Busuu effective? Let’s see.

A few great things about Busuu:

Free online courses. Their courses are generally free and their purpose is to introduce you to certain aspects of the language. You will learn how to greet someone, how to count and how to conjugate someone in the first few lessons, and in order to complete the lesson you also have to complete a writing task. When you have completed three lessons, you also have to pass a test.

Conversation practise. A great feature of the site is the fact that you can chat with natives in your target language. You can also help someone learn a language you already speak. If you’re a little more adventurous, you could exchange your skype screen-names and talk live to someone who already speaks the language you’re learning. As some people say, it’s easier to learn a language if you have someone to practise with.

Apart from these two main pluses, the website offers a wide range of languages to learn and you can learn more than one at the same time. You learn plenty of vocabulary, or if you’re me, you just memorize the beginning/ending of a word/phrase and get away with it(which, clearly, is the wrong approach!).

Over the years, I’ve used quite a few sites similar to Busuu and I can honestly say this one is one of the best. Their courses are better structured and they constantly motivate you by giving you “berries”. On the first 7 days on the site you are a semi-premium member and if you decide to become a full-premium you can download pdfs/mp3s of each lesson. Cool, huh? But also pricey.

All in all, Busuu is a great start if you want to learn a new language. It will offer you enough to get you started, but is not enough. I feel like I need a little more help, so I’ll keep looking for language learning tools, but I’ll keep using Busuu, for sure. :3
